A Jamun tree, a chameleon, a grandfather on horseback and a lost award. Four residents share the memories they hold closest.

Every elder holds a library. Ask the right question and a shelf opens.

Families often ask us what life at Gracias Living is really like. We think the best answer starts with the people who live here.

So our team sat down with four residents and listened. They talked about childhood, faith, family and loss. These are their memories. The quotes are their own words.

Kanta Ingle: Childhood Memories Beneath a Jamun Tree

When Kanta talks about the Jamun tree from her childhood, she smiles. The tree gave her family fruit. It also gave her shade, so she sat beneath it to rest.

“It was very nice.”

Kanta grew up in a middle class family. Her father was the only earner, and she was the eldest of her siblings. Still, the tree gave her a place to pause.

She also remembers a man who waited outside her school. He sold basic goods to passersby. Now and then, he asked the teachers to send a few children out to sing patriotic songs for him. Kanta links this memory to the years around Independence.

Her eyes filled with tears as she described the scene.

Savita Mathur: Her Grandmother, a Chameleon and the Faith That Carried Her

As a child, Savita lived with her maternal grandmother in a huge house. One day, her grandmother showed her a chameleon and how it changed colour. She still remembers it.

Later in life, her road turned hard. When she agreed to marry, her husband already had trouble walking. She said yes anyway. After the wedding, doctors diagnosed him with paralysis. Then she lost a child.

When we asked how she kept going through so much, she laughed.

“God gives challenges to only those who have the power to overcome and endure such challenges.”

Savita says her faith stood beside her whenever she felt low.

Ask Krishna about her childhood in Amritsar and she will talk about her grandfather. He served as a judge in the city and lived in a huge bungalow.

Even today, she remembers him riding a horse.

Because she stays deeply attached to her grandparents, she brings them up often.

Vikram Bhatia: A Father’s Award and Memories of Family

As a boy in Delhi, Vikram watched his father, a history publisher, win many awards. One honour came at Mavlankar Hall. Because of it, the whole family celebrated, and Vikram and his sisters were on cloud nine.

Later, the award was lost during a renovation of the family home. Still, the pride of that day stayed with him.

Vikram speaks warmly about the bond he shares with his sisters. He also speaks about his wife. When he married her, he felt lucky, and he calls her beautiful. Since she passed away, he has missed her.

How Knowing a Resident Shapes Everyday Care

These stories come out because our team knows the people they care for. Good care starts there.

Before a resident moves in, we learn their life history, preferences and hobbies. Then we use it every day. For example, we know how they like their tea, which song brings back a memory and which routine makes a day feel familiar. Read more about how our staff build bonds with residents.

Gracias Living runs two homes in Gurgaon: Blossom in Sector 43 and Zinnia in DLF Phase 3. Explore our assisted living, dementia care and short term stay options, or see everyday moments in our photo and video gallery.
